The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coins are made from 99.99% pure silver, slightly more pure than most other silver bullion at 99.9% purity, and weigh once troy ounce. During the month of February 2008, the market value of the coin was 20 Canadian dollars. The coins experienced different alterations each year including proof releases (1989 only), a colored maple leaf (the design was different from the regular maple leaf design), holographic designs and other designs such as the 2009 issue in commemoration of the 2010 Winter Olympics.
The obverse side (head) of the coin depicts an image of Queen Elizabeth II. There are 3 versions of the effigy: a young head version, an old head version and an older head version. The year of issue and the face value of 5 dollars are present on this side of the coin. On the reverse side bears the national symbol of Canada, the Maple leaf.
The common universal element in all silver maple leaf coins is the phrase “Fine Silver 1 oz Argent Pur” at the lower portion of the reverse side of the coin. In 2009, for the first time of the Royal Canadian Mint, the Silver Maple leaf coins were not packed in Mylar. Due to its high demand, the coins were packed in tubes of 25.
