The second coin to be issued from the second set of the America the Beautiful Quarter Program this year and the 7th from the overall series. The coin was issued from a 10 week interval following the issuance of the 6th co-memorable coin, the Gettysburg National Military Park Silver coin. The coin has a 3 inches diameter, weighs 5 oz. and made from .999 pure silver.
The reverse side depicts the northeast slope view of Mount Reynolds with a mountain goat climbing the rocky slopes of the park’s high country. The mountain goat is the symbol of the national park. Inscriptions such as GLACIER, MONTANA, 2011 and E PLURIBUS UNUM found in the coin. This is the chosen symbol for the national site of the state of Montana. The Glacier National Park was known to the Blackfeet as “The Backbone of the World”.
Glacier National Park houses a million acres of alpine meadows, forest, lakes, rugged peaks and glacially carved valleys in the Northern Rocky Mountains. The park is named after its famous glacier-carved terrains and remains of glaciers originated from the ice age 10,000 years ago. Thirty-five among these glaciers are named and 25 of them are still active. The site was proclaimed as a national reserve on the 22nd of February 1897.
The design of the coin was created by AIP Associate Designer Barbara Fox and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Charles Vickers.
